CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
For hours, Laney had buttoned down all the issues should could before she took off. Sheâd even worked in a conversation with the President.
Now she was second guessing leaving tomorrow. In her gut, she knew they should just leave tonight. Jake and the other were after all.
But she knew that Molly, Nyssa and even Eve needed some time to process what was to come. And Laney wanted to give them at least some.
And they werenât the only ones. She needed a little time herself. She needed to be with her uncle, Cain, Cleo and Nyssa.
Grief stabbed through her and she closed her eyes. Right, Cainâs gone. Sheâd forgotten. The hole in her chest opened up a little wider.
Taking some breaths, she pushed the heavy feelings aside. She needed to try and be as upbeat as possible for her uncleâs sake.
Sheâd stopped in at the pillars but her uncle hadnât been there. Bas had said heâd gone back to the cottage. So Laney made her way up the path and opened the door. âUncle Patrick?â
âBack here,â he called from the kitchen.
Closing the door behind her, Laney headed down the hall. She smiled at the sight of her uncle behind the kitchen island preparing a meal. âI checked the bomb shelter, I thought youâd be at the pillars.â
Slicing a cucumber, he shook his head. âNo, Itâs fascinating, but I wanted to have dinner, one last time beforeââ His words cut off and he took a breath. âYouâll be leaving in the morning?â
That had been the plan but there was no point in putting off leaving just so people could sleep. They could do that on the plane. So that was the compromise: everyone got to say their goodbyes and then they would head out. âNo, later tonight. But we have time for dinner.â
Not meeting her gaze, he turned to the sink, grabbing lettuce and dropping it in a colander, before running water over it. âOh, I see. And Nyssa, she has to go too?â
âIâm afraid so.â
An obvious shudder ran through him. He turned off the water, but kept his back to her leaning his hands against the counter, his head down.
âUncle Patrick?â
He turned around, his voice soft. âSo itâs time.â
âIâm afraid so.â She didnât have to ask what he meant. She knew he was referring to the last battle. She wasnât sure what Sri Lanka would reveal, but she had no doubt that things were speeding up. She had no precognition ability, she didnât know what the future held. But in her gut, she knew she wouldnât be returning here until everything had settled.
If she returned at all.
She walked over slowly to him. He looked up at her with tears in his eyes. âI know I canât go with you. Iâll only slow you down. But I wish I could.â
âI do, too. But Iâll need you to do research as soon as we get a location.â
âIâll be ready,â he promised. âBut tonight, how about we pretend itâs just a normal dinner, and not a final one?â
She nodded her throat tight.
